My dad was Born in 1928. Enlisted in the US Navy in 1945 for 2 years. After bootcamp in San Diego he spent time aboard the USS Appalachian, USS St Paul, USS Rogers, and the battleship New Jersey. Spent apprx 18 months in China and the Philippines. Took part in "Operation Crossroads" while aboard the USS Appalachian which witnessed an atomic bomb test near the Kwajalein Atoll, Marshall islands. He was 18 miles from the center of the bomb blast but far enough away to be in a safe location. Several large navy vessels were near ground zero including a WW1 battleship the New Mexico. He said witnessing the destructive power of an atomic bomb blast was an incredible sight. After his discharge he went back to southern California where he married and had 5 children. He is currently retired and resides in Brea, California. Thank you for your service to your country.
