John Hiram Leonard is my paternal great grandfather born 18 Mar 1838 in Licking Co OH, the 7th child of 9 born to Noah and Anna (Floyd) Leonard of Rockingham Co VA. He married Embrazia Houghton 6 Feb 1866 in Iowa Co IA and died 29 May 1911 in Albion, Marshall Co IA. John, his younger brother Henry and 1st cousin Jonathan Floyd joined the Union Army together in Brookfield, La Salle Co IL 2 August 1861. He was honorably discharged in Atlanta GA August 1864 and returned to Iowa where his family had settled. From his pension papers: he was 5’ 10” tall with sandy hair and hazel eyes. In March 1862 near Point Pleasant MO he suffered an attack of rheumatism caused by having to lay out on the cold wet ground. One night is was so cold and wet his hair froze to the ground. The next morning a member of his Company, cousin Jonathan Floyd, had to cut his hair loose from the ground before he could rise. He applied for a pension which was granted 15 Apr 1895 for $6 a month.
